Northern Echos delves into Gord Downie's solo album, Secret Path, with Patrick Downie and Harriet Visitor from the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund. The album is inspired by the story of Chanie Wenjack, a 12-year-old Anishinaabe boy who died escaping Cecilia Jeffrey Residential School. He succumbed to starvation and exposure trying to walk 600km home to his family in Ogoki Post. His story inspired Gord Downie's Secret Path project, which includes 10 poems, 10 songs, a graphic novel, and an animated film. Gord would go on to co-found the Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Fund with his family and the Wenjack family. Skydiggers is a Canadian roots rock band from Toronto formed by Andy Maize and Josh Finlayson.
To tell the story of Skydiggers is to tell the story of a thriving musical collaboration that was born in friendship and has abided with trust. Over the course of many studio albums and countless miles on the road, Skydiggers have grown from enthusiastic youngsters into husbands, fathers, and mentors. And while band members have changed over the decades, Josh Finlayson and Andy Maize remain its beating heart. With new collaborators bringing their unique musical histories into the circle, the sound of Skydiggers continues to evolve.
Rooted in a deep appreciation for storytelling and melody, their music reflects life’s highs and lows with honesty and heart. Whether on stage or in the studio, Skydiggers create songs that resonate – music made by friends, for friends.
