Storytelling Experience

Bruce began telling stories over 25 years ago while still working as a principal in the elementary schools of Scarborough. He soon discovered the impact of storytelling on children. A good story, well told, and the children were enchanted. Bruce was hooked. Through workshops, reading and experience, he has worked to hone his skills as a storyteller.

Since his retirement from teaching, Bruce has continued to work as a storyteller. In these years he made a new discovery: adults loves stories as much as children do! While much of Bruce’s storytelling continues to happen in schools, more and more of his telling is to adults in a variety of venues.

Schools

Since beginning his career as a storyteller, Bruce has told in hundreds of schools in York Durham, Peel and Halton Regions as well as the City of Toronto. He tells in public, Catholic and private schools.

Generally programs are offered on a half-day or full-day basis. Bruce prefers to work with smaller groups of students (approximately 100 or fewer) in a more intimate setting, allowing for more interaction between teller and listener.Depending on the school's timetable, generally 3 sessions can be scheduled in a half day, 6 in a full day.

Bruce has also presented storytelling programs in schools in Sudbury, North Bay, Owen Sound and other areas further from his Newmarket home. Usually these are part of week long tours to offset the costs of travel and accommodation.

Programs are available for students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. For details, check out the appropriate pages on this web site or contact Bruce.

Churches

Bruce has been a frequent guest in many churches in southern Ontario, as a homilist, or a workshop leader. Bruce has told stories in houses of worship from several faiths.

Museums

Bruce has developed and told stories in many museums in Ontario. Check out the historical storytelling section for details.

Festivals

Bruce has told at storytelling festivals in Toronto, St. Marys, Newmarket, Brantford, and Ottawa.
